Handed Down ("the App") is developed by Data Action Studio ("we," "us," "our"). Handed Down is built so that your family's recipe cards belong to your family alone: we operate no servers, require no accounts, and never receive, see, or collect the cards or recipes you create. This policy explains where your data lives, what device permissions the App uses, and the choices you have.
Everything you add in Handed Down — card scans, transcriptions, ingredients, steps, stories, and voice answers — is stored on your device and in your own Apple iCloud account, and is shared only with the family members you personally invite. None of it is ever transmitted to Data Action Studio. All text recognition and recipe structuring happens on your device — no card image or text is ever sent to us or to any outside service. We collect no analytics, show no ads, and use no third-party tracking of any kind.
When you use Handed Down, you may choose to record:
All of this is stored in the App on your device and synced through Apple iCloud (CloudKit) under the iCloud account of the person who created the box. Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Data Action Studio has no ability to access it.
When you scan a card, Handed Down reads the handwriting using Apple's on-device Vision framework and drafts the ingredients, steps, and other fields for you to review and correct — this happens entirely on your phone. On supported devices, the App may also use Apple's on-device Apple Intelligence to help tidy up that draft; this, too, runs locally and never sends card text anywhere. No recipe text or card image ever leaves your device except through your own iCloud sync and sharing.
A recipe box is private to its creator until they explicitly invite family members using Apple's iCloud sharing. Invited participants can view and add cards to that box. Sharing is always by invitation only — there is no public visibility, no discovery, and no way for anyone outside the invited family to see a box. The box's creator can stop sharing or remove participants at any time through the share settings in the App.
Each permission is requested only when first needed; you can change any of them later in iOS Settings.
Nothing. The App contains no analytics, no advertising, no tracking SDKs, and no third-party services other than Apple's own iCloud infrastructure. If you email us for support, we receive only what you send us, and we use it only to help you.
Handed Down is made for families preserving recipe cards; it is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
You are in full control. Deleting a card or a box in the App removes it from iCloud for every family member it was shared with. You can also remove all of the App's iCloud data from iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. Because we hold no copies, there is nothing for us to retain or delete on our side.
We may update this policy as the App changes. Material changes will be reflected with an updated "Last updated" date above.
